Book Recommendations for Christians Who Want to Grow in Their Faith

When people tell me that they don’t have time to read, or that they do not like to read… I just wonder if they’ve found the right book. Or if they have found that author that can paint a vivid picture on a page with words. If I had limited my reading to only what I read while I was in school, I would have missed out on books that helped me grow in my faith more than I thought possible.

If you are new to your faith or looking to grow in your faith, I recommend the three books below. Each author is talented in connecting, encouraging, and showing their love through their words.

Just like it takes time to grow relationships with other people, it takes time and energy to grow your relationship with the Lord. Reading is a great outlet to learn more about the Lord through people who have done the research, and have life-events to share that you can connect with. Here are my top three book recommendations to every new Christian or Christians who are looking to grow in their faith through FUN, and EASY reads:

1. Uninvited: Lysa TerKuerst

This book was a game-changer for me. It was the first Christian “self-help” (I don’t know if this is really the category it belongs in, but it is about bettering oneself) that I read. I call it the “break up book) and recommend it to so many people! Although I call it the “breakup book”, it goes beyond just relationship breakups and dives deep into rejection. Rejection in families, rejection from friends, rejection from a job… all areas of rejection. This book brings all the hurt, confidence issues, and questions around rejection to light, and also help the reader start on a track to overcome the most painful rejections.

We all face rejection at some point in our life. Some are more painful than others. Whether you are in a season of rejection right now, or if you know someone who is… this book is a must-read! Read it now!

2. Everybody Always: Bob Goff

Bob Goff has a way of finding Jesus in his life stories and reflection. He weaves the Gospel into every chapter in a way that is not overdone and is respectful to all of those who pick up his books. This book focuses on finding a way to love everybody you meet. Just about every chapter tells a different story or life experience that Goff has had, and he shares what he has learned through even the simplest actions, that we all experience. Example, going through TSA at an airport. We’ve all done it, yet have you taken time to love on the TSA agents as they deserve to be loved? I am thankful for Goff pointing out the reality of my heart and posture towards others, which reflects back to God.

3. Get Out of Your Head: Jennie Allen

My first response to this book: wow. This book provides actionable steps for Christians to let go of their fears and anxieties and turn them back to God just by recognizing and changing our thought pattern. It sounds hard because we create habits in our thoughts, but the first step is recognizing the fears that we have that cause us anxiety. Our mind controls our behaviors, attitudes, postures towards others… and Allen emphasizes the importance of capturing our own thoughts and giving ways to redirect them so that we can live well and with God's call.

Each of these books has had a significant impact on how I love God, love myself, and love others. They are all easy to read and captivating once you give them a shot. Although there are so many avenues to draw closer to God such as podcasts, YouTube videos, music… reading, or listening to audiobooks, is my favorite.

If you want to grow closer to God, I challenge you to dive into one of these books. If you have any book recommendations, that I missed, leave them in the comments below!
