Getting started

Updated: Mar 2, 2020

3 tips for those new or exploring their faith!

Starting new things can be scary. Period. Especially when they are going to be life-changing. If you're like me, you like to have as much planned out as possible so that there aren't very many surprises. Or you could be someone that needs to get everyone's opinion before you start something. Or maybe you just like to jump right in & see where the current takes you. I believe it doesn't matter if your a strategist or a "Just do it" kind of girl, the world needs all of us. & it doesn't matter how you get started in your faith, you just need to do it.

I started my faith journey about 3 years ago when I was in college. I remember always wondering "how do I begin?" & "where do I start?" It always felt like everyone else was miles ahead of me I am going to share with you 3 quick tips to help you get started, or so you can help someone get started on their walk with God.

1. Just say hi (to Jesus)

How do you make a new friend? You go up, say hi and introduce yourself. Sure, it might be awkward at first but the more time you spend with them- the closer you get. When you say hi to Jesus you are entering into a conversation with Him, which is praying. There is not a right or wrong way to pray, your conversations with Him should be just as unique as you are. When you are in a relationship with someone your relationship grows when you communicate & get to know them better. Can you have a strong relationship with someone if you never talk to them? No, it requires effort & vulnerability. You don't have to be vulnerable & spill your guts right away though... just start by saying "hi".

2. Get a bible

I LOVE looking at bibles whenever I go to the book store. They make them so unique, personable, & beautiful now a days. It can be hard to choose which one you want when there are so many. I've had multiple different versions such as The Message, NIV, NLT... but I

have landed on one that has been a game changer. I have fallen in love with the Christian Standard Bible (CSB). I love the She Reads Truth bibles because they are elegant, inviting, beautiful & easy to read & understand. I would recommend CSB for anyone whether you are just starting your walk, or if you've been walking for years. There is a difference between WANTING to read the Bible & feeling like you HAVE too. Find one that tis inviting & makes you excited every time you open it.

The Bible is one of God's way of communicating with us so that we can get to know Him better. If you don't know where to start reading, I would recommend starting in the New Testament. But there are so awesome reading plans out there that are only a Google search away.

3. Find a church home

This can take some time & be pretty intimidating. Just like you shop for an apartment, house, or a car... you shop for a church home as well. It is important to find a home where you feel welcomed, connected, & loved. This may not happen on your first visit & it may take some research online. When you're looking online, just remember that reviews & comments are opinions. If there are one or two low reviews, it probably isn't an accurate reflection of the church. If there are multiple reviews saying the same negative comments, then it may be something to keep in mind. Ultimately, we grow when we surround ourselves with community & the best way to find a community is by finding a church home.

It is important to remember that not every church is for every single person. There is nothing to be ashamed of if you just feel like a church isn't the best fit for you. Shop around & don't stop until you find one.

These three quick steps can be intimidating but they will change your life. Set goals, find someone to go on this journey with you, & just go for it! I promise you won't regret it.
